Rebecca McGarvie is the founder and director of Melting Pot Arts. After years of leading arts projects in her local community on a voluntary basis, Rebecca decided to take the final step and set up the business in June 2005. Winner of Durham Business Club's 'Networker of the Year', Runner Up for 'Best Cultural & Creative Business' at the North East Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards and short listed for the Enterprise award at the Prince's Trust Celebrate Success Awards in 2006, Rebecca is a well respected artist and arts manager who is set to lead Melting Pot Arts in many more exciting projects in the future. BackgroundAfter attending performing arts groups, bands and choirs throughout her childhood Rebecca became more heavily involved with youth theatre, working on many projects in both amateur and professional settings. In 2001 Rebecca led a student team in producing 'The Boy Friend' at Belmont Comprehensive School. This led to working with The Durham Gala Theatre Stage School from 2002-2003 as Stage Manager, taking responsibility for the safety and welfare of the 150 company members, producing a variety of shows. Through experiencing the arts over many years as a participant and leader Rebecca felt passionately that everyone should have access to high quality experiences and set out on her mission to bring the arts to more people in her local community. Following the success of the first variety performance at the Gala Theatre in 2002 Rebecca realised the potential for a participatory arts organisation and set up Melting Pot Arts as it is today. ProjectsWhilst Rebecca is involved with every aspect of Melting Pot Arts 'behind the scenes' she also gets the opportunity to deliver on some of our projects. Often seen on site at outdoor events, jogging down school corridors or leading sessions during intensive week long projects, Rebecca particularly enjoys the challenge of creatively directing large scale projects. This role enables her to work across many art forms and direct her team within a certain theme. SingingDespite enjoying the multi-disciplinary side to her role, Rebecca's first love has always been singing and she is most at home when leading vocal sessions. Rebecca firmly believes that everyone has a voice and should be given the chance to enjoy it. She works with everyone from babies to grandmothers and novices to experienced singers, leading fun, energetic workshops which enabling even the most shy beginners to have fun singing. |
